Tristan LOVES doing crafts!  It’s the way to his heart for someone to take the time to make a craft with him.  It was one of his favourite things while we were home in Canada visiting family and friends.  Since he has been back to Northern Ireland he has been missing his family in Canada greatly.

My mom has had a remedy for this:  Webcam craft sessions!  It started with one little origami dog, but now Tristan insists on a craft with Nana every week or so and really looks forward to it and enjoys his special time with Nana.

This is from their Tree Time at Tea Time session.

The first step was for Tristan to paint a toilet paper roll brown like the trunk of a tree in preparation for his visit with Nana

Then when it was time for Nanacam.  Tristan cut a slit about an inch long down the side of the roll, and cut a matching one from the opposite side of the same rim.

Tristan cut out a tree-top shape from a piece of green card.  I’m always very impressed with his scissor skills!

Then we took out some glue and he tore some bits of tissue paper into usable sizes, crumpled them, dabbed on a bit of glue and stuck them onto the front of his tree top making ‘leaves’.

When the glue had dried he slid the tree top into the slits in the trunk and he had his own little tree.

This craft went over so well we soon did it with the wee girls when Phil had a day off work so that it was easier to keep an eye on them.  They enjoyed putting the tissue on the trees…but equally enjoyed pulling it right off again when given the chance!

In the end, they ended up with their own little forest.

Tristan and Kallista now have their trees taking root outside their tent in the living room.  Just in case they need some firewood for their supper.

  1. Oh, very special fun and you shared enough information for others to make this or have their own Nanacam. Thank you, Carolyn

  2. What an adorable tree craft! Thanks for sharing.

Crafting over a webcam is a great idea. I’m going to have to try that. We’ve been looking for ways to include our children’s far-away grandparents in our children’s lives, but they don’t really know how to interact or what to talk about or anything.

My children love seeing family on the webcam, but then get shy, too. Tristan is especially shy, but when Nana came to visit when he was 2, he ran up and held her hand at the airport, so it does form connections. Crafts are a great way to bond, and there’s something special for them to have at the end of the session they can look at and form memories from. Let me know how it goes.
